National News: The Telangana government is preparing a law aimed at protecting elderly parents from neglect by their own children. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said that if any government employee fails to take care of his or her parents, 10 to 15 percent of the salary will be deducted. This money will then be directly transferred to the parent’s bank account, ensuring they are not left helpless.
Speaking at an event in Hyderabad, the Chief Minister explained that just as employees receive a salary every month, their parents should also have a guaranteed monthly income. This move, he said, would provide dignity and financial security to aging parents. He added that the responsibility of caring for parents is not only moral but will soon become a legal obligation in Telangana.
Chief Minister Reddy has instructed Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao to set up a committee for drafting this law. The committee will study similar laws, consult with experts, and design a clear framework. Officials said that once the draft is ready, it will be placed before the state assembly. If passed, Telangana would become one of the first states to legally link salaries with parental care.
The announcement was made during a program where the Chief Minister handed out appointment letters to newly selected Group-II employees. Addressing them, he reminded the recruits to be compassionate towards citizens who come with grievances. He said kindness in governance is as important as discipline and efficiency. The message combined administrative responsibility with a strong reminder of family values.
This proposed law is expected to bring justice to elderly parents who often face neglect, abuse, or abandonment from their children. Reports in recent years show several cases where old parents were denied food, shelter, or medical care. Some were even physically abused and forced out of their own homes. The law is designed to act as a safeguard against such cruelty.
If implemented, the law could change the lives of thousands of parents across Telangana. By directly depositing a share of the salary into parents’ accounts, the government hopes to ensure steady financial support. Elderly citizens, who often struggle with poverty after being abandoned, will have a more secure life. This initiative may also discourage children from neglecting or disrespecting their parents.
Experts believe the law will strengthen social values by reminding citizens of their duty toward family. While critics say implementation may be difficult, supporters argue that it sets a strong example for other states. Telangana’s initiative is not only about financial aid but about restoring respect for elders in society. If successful, it may inspire similar laws across India in the future.
